Mumford and Sons - Roll away your stone

Posted by Pelgrim on January 4th, 2011

Roll away your stone, I’ll roll away mine
Together we can see what we will find
Don’t leave me alone at this time,
For I’m afraid of what I will discover inside

Cause you told me that I would find a hole,
Within the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal,
And all the while my character it steals

Darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I see

It seems that all my bridges have been burned,
But you say that’s exactly how this grace thing works
It’s not the long walk home that will change this heart,
But the welcome I receive with the restart

Darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I see
Darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I’ve seen

Stars hide your fires,
These here are my desires
And I will give them up to you this time around
And so, I’ll be found with my stake stuck in this ground
Marking the territory of this newly impassioned soul

hide your fires,
These here are my desires
And I won’t give them up to you this time around
And so, I’ll be found with my stake stuck in this ground
Marking the territory of this newly impassioned soul

But you, you’ve gone too far this time
You have neither reason nor rhyme
With which to take this soul that is so rightfully mine

I do not wish to read meaning into something but I have seen on the Internet many posts and comments that this is a religious song versus those that claim that it is an anti-religious song of someone taking a stand and in the end finally refusing to follow Christianity.

The song borrows its symbols heavily from the Gospel even the stake, stauros in Greek to which Jesus was raised and in the end it boils down to that struggle. Coming to grips with the struggle of our natural man, its inability to surrender completely, the man of flesh to die in Christ and be crucified with him, in order to be raised with him, a Spiritual man.

We can cling to the old, the stake put firmly in earths substance from which our bodies were formed and Life animated or embrace the promise of the Spirit of Life, Life everlasting and leave an empty cave behind.
The choice is ours to make, no one can force it upon us.
